Subject: HAL and BIOS relation

Hi. I would like to know if the HAL routines call the BIOS routines. I have found a lot of times that in a modern OS the BIOS routines are not used and that the OS has hardware direct access. May be I am misunderstanding this concept. If I am not wrong, the HAL should be a level of abstraction which let the OS works fine on different platforms. So, I would think that the HAL should be helped by some lower level code and, in my opinion, this lower level code must be in the BIOS. I mean, if the chipset needs some code in order to work properly, I can not think that this code is implemented in the HAL. I would think that it is implemented in firmware and I would call it BIOS as well. Sorry but I have not found enough informations in order to explain this big picture concept which could be straightforward. Thanks.
