If you enable it, it shortly says "Hash submitted" and then it says "JSON object could not be decoded". Maybe it just hasn't return the results yet since an empty string could also cause a JSON parser to fail :)

A few times I even saw a result in the form of "0/50", which is a hyperlink, but when you scroll afterwards it mostly crashes.
It also crashed for me the first time I enabled "Check VirusTotal.com" in the options.
There is also a typo in the other option "Submit Uknown Executables".
Edit: It seems to work most of the time when you just check a single file at once . You get the JSON error when you have a pending check for more than one process at the same time for sure.
Edit2: Maybe it is locale/language setting-specific. It works fine on a Windows 7 Ultimate x64, that is English, but it crashes on a Windows 7 Professional x64, which is German.
Edit3: It seems like the column is not properly updated after processes disappear. I suddenly have a "1/50" value for the Process Explorer process (what an irony) and when I click the hyperlink the VT result shows 0/50. The value was 0/50 about an hour ago.
Edit4: I encountered a file, that wasn't known and it was submitted. After the "File submitted" message I got another one "This operation..." and then it crashed.
