I had a mysterious problem similar to yours.   Unlike you, I mistakenly believed that my problem was with DVDFab, but it was actually with the 64-bit Windows 7 driver provided by Microsoft.  When I updated with the Intel driver (Dell mobo with Intel chipset) the problem went away.  Believe me, I had tried lots of other things.

In my situation, Windows Explorer also did not recognize a DVD in the drive, though it DID recognize a CD.  A few other apps would work after a fashion; Media Player would play a DVD, for example.  I went as far as actually swapping out the drive cable, and exchanging the drive with one that was Windows 7-certified.

Unfortunately it was not easy to find a DVDFab user with a 64-bit Win7 system, so most of the suggestions I got on their forum really didn't pertain to my machine.  I ended up going it alone, and tried the Intel driver out of desperation.  It magically solved the problem, and the computer has worked with every subsequent update of DVDFab.

Good luck....
Lance
