I haven't yet found a solution, but I thought I would list what I have tried.
I found this site which has a really nice summary of the VSS service and possible fixes for more common errors in layman's terms - http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50010.aspx
- Check state of write components (vssadmin list writers)
- Look for messages in your Windows logs
- Make sure that the VSS service isn't disabled
- Re-register the VSS components
It also got me thinking it would be extremely helpful if you could get a log output from disk2vhd!
