Subject: XP system in re-boot loop

Long story short, I screwed up something but not sure what. This is on an existing install of XP that had been working but has since evolved into an endless re-boot loop. It gets to the point where the "Welcome" screen should next appear, but then reboots.
I loaded another drive and installed XP on it and booted from it with the other drive still connected to the M/B. I can see directories / files etc. and can even move/copy files from the "troubled" drive to the new drive.
What , if anything , can be done to return the drive to boot in a normal manner ?
