Process Explorer : procexp only displays one pane

I'm trying to track down why my c.p.u. usage will jump from 1% to 30% and stay there for a while even though I am not making any changes to anything on my computer. I understand open browsers etc. will tie up memory but why sudden leaps in c.p.u. when nothing is being touched.

To that end I downloaded procexp. onto my win 7 box. When I open it I see only the top pane. When I select display show lower pane it displays a completely empty pane. 

I have been having multiple problems with my computer lately. It seems like getting a handle on cpu usage is a good place to start after doing the obvious things which haven't worked. 

Currently cpu is usage is 22%. All that I am doing differently from when it was one percent is I am typing in this box. A few minutes ago it was even higher and I wasn't doing anything. 

First step: make sure I have procexp configured correctly.
