Found the sucker!!
I jumped to the entry as you advised and it opened Task Scheduler. As you would guess, I found a task named "Synaptic TouchPad Enhancements". Digging around in the task's properties, I found the path for the program script is missing "C:". How? I don't know. This task must have been created when the Synaptics driver package was installed - it certainly wasn't created by me.
Sorry. In my haste I somehow forgot to provide that information. I'm on Windows 8.1 64-bit.
Anyway, this mystery is solved now. Thank you for helping me find the cause of it.
