the CPU usage is a sum of a lot of node.exe (https://nodejs.org) processes running for a short time and spike the CPU:

I never used this so I have no idea how to fix this.

MagicAndre1981,

Thanks for looking at this.  That's a real service and you should be paid to do it.  I've been trying to learn how to use the Windows Performance Analyzer, and so far I'm like a blind mole rat nosing around in there.

Before I saw your post, I was about to write that the problem had stopped this last weekend.  I received a message from the Prey Project (which finds your PC if it's lost or stolen) that it hadn't seen my PC in about a month.  It warned that my copy of Windows might have overwritten or otherwise disabled the Prey agent on the PC.  That month corresponded with the period of much-heightened CPU activity on the machine since the Windows anniversary update.  After I re-installed the Prey agent, everything was fine again.  But I wasn't sure Prey was why.  The PC went from a consistent 22% usage of the CPU down to its usual 4% in normal activity.  The fan noise stopped.  That's circumstantial evidence, but I thought I'd report it.

But your analysis of the trace indeed shows Prey as part of the problem.  I'm almost shocked at the correspondence.  Thank you!

Another tidbit in case it helps someone else is that node.exe did not show up in a significant way, so far as I know, in task manager.  But many processes were taking far more CPU time than usual, including Norton Security, "System" (aka ntoskrnl.exe), and even Firefox.  It made it tough to see what was going on ... everything seemed more resource-intensive.

It's nice to have a quiet, less stressed PC.  Thanks Magic.

Autoruns : Logon or Logoff scripts

It seem that this issue still exists in autoruns 13.62.

We have some GPOs that run scripts at user logon. Paths of the scripts can be found in the Registry keys below "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy".

But autoruns does not show these scripts in its output (tested on MS Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2).

Miscellaneous Utilities : ProcDump internal clues

I am interested in finding out any details on how procdump might be using the PSSCaptureSnapshot or similar method.

We would love to have some of this functionality, but as procdump is not redistributable we are looking to write our own process dumps (not using Windows Error Reporting) and we'd like to use the process copy/reflection method hinted at in procdump. The PssCaptureSnapshot is not heavily documented, but we're pretty sure it must be using something we could use.

Any clues or ideas as to how to generate our own full memory dumps of a process using this reflection method so as to avoid lengthy waits for the dump to be made on the original process?

BTW, it appears as if WER is using a similar mechanism because if WER is dumping a process due to an unhandled exception, we can see 2 processes with the same name when using Process.GetProcessesByName (.NET) and 1 is suspended. We'd like to copy that behavior, but retain more control over it.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.

BgInfo : Bginfo taskbar bug?

My IT department is considering using Bginfo, and we thought the system tray mode was a good idea, but I found a problem with it.  If you run Bginfo with the /taskbar switch and you also load a settings (.bgi) file, a popup window shows up every time.  If you don't load the settings file, it stays in the system tray like normal, no popup.  Is this a bug?  I searched online and it seems people have been having this issue for years.

the GD link works fine.

The usage comes from the Offline File service (cscsvc.dll) which syncs/enumerates data (cscsvc.dll!SyncEnumFindFileInDirectory).

The SYSTEM process usage is caused a bit by the driver TmXPFlt.sys which is also loaded by the Offline File service. Look for a driver/program update or remove the driver/software.

You also use the Version 1607 of Windows 10 without any updates. Check Windows update and install the 14393.222 via KB3194496 and look if this improves the situation.
