This thread is at top of search engine "DuckDuckGo" results for "how to use sync.exe"
I assume a lot of hits have elevated this thread -- but it has not been answered in 33 months.
Like the OP I floundered with what to do with sync.exe
SOLUTION: It worked for me
After some experimenting I got a result with a FAT32 USB thumb drive

I assume a lot of hits have elevated this thread -- but it has not been answered in 33 months.
Like the OP I floundered with what to do with sync.exe
SOLUTION: It worked for me
After some experimenting I got a result with a FAT32 USB thumb drive
- Copy the full-name to sync.exe to Notepad
eg, C:\my_folder\sync.exe - There are two parameters/arguments that are to be added after the full-name
- First param is ...
-r ... to release the stubborn drive, eg, close the app
... AND ...
-e ... to eject the stubborn drive - Add -r -e to the end of the full-name string
eg, C:\my_folder\sync.exe -r -e
Note: single spaces between .exe and -r and -e - Second parameter ... Identify the drive letter of the USB device to be released/ejected
- Add the drive letter to the Notepad string
eg, to release/eject drive "K:"
eg, C:\my_folder\sync.exe -r -e k
- single spaces between .exe and -r and -e and k - Copy the completed string to clipboard
- Paste the complete string into "Run" edit box
If Run is not visible on Start menu ... hold the Windows key and type the letter "r" - OK button on "Run dialog
- Right hand end of task-bar will display something like "drive can be ejected"
In fact the USB device can be it can be pulled out
Somewhere I read "sync.exe" must be run as administrator. The only way I can see of doing that is to login as Administrator. Command window does not take "pasting"
I am not an expert but after 2 days of frustration on a number of forums I could not find how/where to use sync.exe.
This sync.exe was a desperate experiment and it worked for me. It might not be the solution for you.
Hope this helps :)
