Subject: Unresponsive PC but CPU utilization OK

My old Vista laptop with only 2GB memory becomes unresponsive when Windows Update is running, particularly when it is invoked by Microsoft Security Essentials. Physical Memory usage goes high, then disk utilisation is high. Seems like SuperFetch is trying to reload everything that was paged out when Windows Update was using all the memory. The disk activity light is on solidly.
